Sometimes I get asked to participate in an interior design project for friends. This time it was to transform an ordinary magnolia bedroom into a stylish, comfortable and sophisticated bedroom for a guy. It needed to have a focal point so whilst having a look around our marvellous local Wotton Auction Rooms I spotted a large wonderfully carved wooden fireplace surround. It struck me that it would make a rather nice bed head and would certainly be a feature. I nervously waited during the sale, bid on it and was delighted to get it.
By now we had chosen and painted the walls in a lovely dark but warm grey and I decided to paint the headboard in Frenchic “Grey Pebble” and dry brushed the stunning detailing using “ Wedding Cake”. I then used the gorgeous Frenchic Defining Wax all over it to add depth and gravitas. I finished that a couple of months ago but I’m happy to say that the upholstered bit for the middle section of the headboard that I commissioned has just been completed and fitted. I chose a natural flax linen which was deep buttoned and now adds comfort and softness and had a valance made in the same fabric to tie it all together.
I managed to source two rather gorgeous lamps that went perfectly with the “Lyre” chair I’d restored using a French toile fabric on the seat and Frenchic “Panther” on the frame with the Lyre highlighted in gold Frensheen.
A limited edition Karma Sutra print with a warming fuchsia pink mount just added a little bit of colour and interest.
The ceiling was painted using a colour called calamine (just like the lotion) for warmth and a grey silky rope braid was affixed at ceiling level all around the top of the walls as a finishing detail.
The bedroom is just about finished now and we are delighted with the outcome.
It just goes to show what you can do by up-cycling a fireplace surround and giving it another purpose.
Incidentally we have another pine fireplace surround on our website currently that would be just right for a single bed!!!!
